Reporting Absences
A parent or guardian must verify a student’s absence by phone or through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal within three (3) days of the absence.
For a medical or dental absence, the student may submit a note from the healthcare provider within one week of returning to school. The absence will then be coded as exempt and will not count toward the student’s overall absence percentage.
Verify an Absence by Phone
Call the NVHS Attendance Line at 775-677-5499. Voicemail is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Please speak slowly and provide the following information:
- Your student’s first and last name
- The date or dates of the absence
- The reason for the absence
- Your name and phone number
Infinite Campus will be updated after the absence request has been processed.
Verify an Absence Through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal
The Infinite Campus Parent Portal accepts absence requests for the current date or future dates only. Parents and guardians may also use the portal to report a late arrival or early departure.

Students Leaving During School Hours
If your student needs to leave school during the day, please call the NVHS Attendance Office at 775-677-5499 with the time and reason for the early release.
Once we verify your identity as the student's parent or legal guardian and confirm the phone number you are calling from, we will call your student to the attendance office so they can sign themselves out.
Please allow sufficient time for us to locate your student. It may take longer to reach students during lunch, physical education classes, or other activities.
Student Pick-Up by Someone Other Than a Parent or Guardian
If someone other than a parent or legal guardian will be picking up your student, the parent or guardian must notify the Attendance Office in advance and provide the name of the authorized individual.
The authorized individual must:
- Report to the Main Office.
- Present a current government-issued photo ID.
- Sign the student out before the student is called from class.
A current government-issued photo ID is required for anyone signing a student out of school.
Approved Release Form
Parents and guardians may also complete an Approved Release Form and submit it to the Attendance Office.
Individuals listed on the form will be authorized to pick up the designated student throughout the school year. Parents or guardians may update or revoke an Approved Release authorization at any time by contacting the Attendance Office.
DMV Certificate of Attendance
The DMV Certificate of Attendance (Form DMV-301) is a Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles form, not a Washoe County School District form.
To access the form, visit the Nevada DMV website and search for "attendance". Download Form DMV-301.
Purpose of the Form
Per Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS 392), this form is required for students between the ages of 14 and 18 who are enrolled in school and wish to obtain an instruction permit or driver's license. The form certifies that the student is either meeting or exempt from Nevada school attendance requirements.
The form may also be used by schools to suspend a student's instruction permit or driver's license, or deny future driving privileges, if the student is declared a habitual truant.
DMV Form DMV-301 is valid for 60 days from the date it is signed.
How to Submit the Form
- Complete only the Student Information section at the top of the form.
- Submit the completed form to the Attendance Secretary in the Main Office.
- If the student's attendance meets Nevada eligibility requirements, the signed form will be available for pickup on the next school day.
Attendance Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for a signed DMV Certificate of Attendance, students must:
- Maintain at least 90% average daily attendance.
- Have no truancy occurrences.

Chronic Absenteeism
If a student must miss an entire class period for any reason, it is the parent's or guardian's responsibility to provide written or verbal verification to the school before, during, or within three (3) days of the absence.
If an absence is not verified within three days of the student's return to school, it will be coded as Unverified (UNV).
What Is Chronic Absenteeism?
Students who miss 10% or more of the total number of class periods during a semester—for any reason—are considered chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism guidelines are established by both the State of Nevada and the federal government.
Impact on Students
Students will not be retained or fail a course based solely on attendance.
However, any student who misses 10% or more of the class periods in a semester-long course will be identified as chronically absent for that course.
